Web Design Trends 2014

What’s Hot

Large Images

When large, high-quality images are the primary focus point, there’s less need for embellishments.

Parallax scrolling is one of the hottest new trends in web design. It creates a remarkable 3D experience while scrolling down the page.

Flat UI

Flat design is more than a trend, but a solution to common web design issues. Flat UI highlights specific calls-to-actions and allows for easy navigation.

What’s Not

Splash Pages

Splash pages can look really sharp, but the problem is they are bad for SEO. Since they lack in content, you won’t see splash pages ranking high.

Single Page Sites

Single page sites were meant to make it easier on the reader, but the result is they often take too much time to load, and are not SEO-friendly.

The Next Fad

Interactive Infographics

Interactive infographics are a great way to present useful information for users. Infographics are a hot trend, so why not utilize them in web design.

The Return of Animated GIFs

GIFs can create movement to a website, grabbing the attention of the reader in order to keep them engaged longer.

Mix and Match Typography

Mix and match typography can be used to display a good amount of content without it looking cluttered.

  • Animated GIFs? Wow… I would rethink that one. Their abuse can really make a web page extremely slow (if you don’t believe me, go surf some Tumblr blogs!)

Why read about it when you can watch it? Videos are becoming an effective tool of communication in today’s mobile world. Instead of boring blurbs, companies are opting for short videos that convey their message more effectively. Videos are also great at boosting the visibility of a site in searches, especially with the right SEO.
