You may or may not know it, but you’re a designer. We’re all designers. Because at its core, design is simply creating a way to do something. It’s true, some people are more adept at this than others (and thank goodness for that). But, if you stop to think about all the things that are designed around us, it’s pretty amazing.
Enter Thirty Conversations on Design, a project from our Minneapolis-based design firm Little & Company. In its second year, we’ve tapped thirty people from across the globe that are responsible for designing our world. These aren’t necessarily the designers who create logos or packages (although some of them are and they’re killer at what they do), these are creative thinkers who see a problem and are driven to solve it. They’re all celebrities in their own right and heroes to the design nerds among us.
The participants videotaped their answers to two questions: “what single example of design inspires you most?” and “what problem should design solve next?” It’s fascinating when you start to pick up on some common threads of thought from such a diverse group of creatives: the education system, clean water, or, simply, problem-solving itself.
It’s not often — or maybe it never happens — that you have one forum to hear from the likes of skateboarding phenom and entrepreneur Tony Hawk, typography superstar Jessica Hische, writer Daniel Pink, famed Swiss Miss blogger Tina Roth Eisenberg, or academy award-winning director Pete Docter. But here you have it.
Jump on. Make sure to watch a good mix of videos. Five or six. Then leave your own commentary and strike up discussions with other viewers (some of whom are the participants themselves).
In the spirit of continuous growth, it’ll make you want to be a better designer. It definitely does for us. And if we put our heads together, we can design a pretty cool world.
