A content delivery network (CDN) is one of the best ways to speed up your website and ensure that everyone, no matter where they’re located throughout the world, receives the same performance as folks who are located next to your home country’s servers.

A CDN works as a network of servers, delivering content in a more efficient manner. In short, if you don’t have a CDN, your website is most likely using a shared server that’s relatively close to where you reside.

Unfortunately, this means that if one of your site visitors is on the other side of the country, they most likely don’t get the same performance, since the server is so far away from them.

All of this is solved with a CDN, and the KeyCDN platform is an option for you to choose from.

KeyCDN boasts that they have a real time content delivery network built for the future. Seeing as how this is a somewhat vague statement, we wanted to figure out whether or not KeyCDN is worth your while, and if it offers reasonable rates for improving your website performance.

KeyCDN Pricing

The first area we want to look at is how much you can expect to spend on the KeyCDN service. Pricing is structured from the numbers of gigabytes used by your website.

Here’s the quick breakdown of what you can expect:

  • First 10TB – $0.04 for North America, $0.04 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 40TB – $0.036 for North America, $0.036 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 100TB – $0.032 for North America, $0.032 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 350TB – $0.028 for North America, $0.028 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 500TB – $0.02 for North America, $0.02 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 2PB – $0.01 for North America, $0.01 for Europe and $0.04 for other regions.
  • Next 3PB – You must contact KeyCDN.

This may look a little complex at first, but in reality, it’s the best setup for you to save on your CDN. They don’t force you to stick with two or three plans regardless of your site capacity, and they even offer a calculator to give you an idea of how much you should expect to spend for your site.

For example, if your estimated traffic per month uses 100GB, your rate is $4 per month. If the traffic is uses 10,000GB per month, your rate is $400 per month.

Support for Several Other Platforms

Although WordPress is super easy with the plugin, you can still integrate with KeyCDN if you’re using one of the following content management systems:

  • Drupal
  • Joomla
  • Magento
  • Typo3
  • ModX
  • Craft
  • Prestashop

What’s cool is that many CDN companies pretty much leave you on your own to make the integration, but KeyCDN is there with you the entire way.

Beautiful Reporting and Other Dashboard Tools

Realtime reporting serves as one of the true standout features from KeyCDN, since you can go into the backend and see exactly what is happening at that exact moment. Other dashboard tools include file browsing, invoice viewing, account usage reports and a responsive interface for you to check on your CDN from a mobile device.

KeyCDN Ease of Use

We already talked about the WordPress plugin. That’s one of the best ways to make the user interface super easy. Regardless of the CMS or platform you’re running, you can sign up for a free KeyCDN trial and get started right from the beginning.

What’s nice is that the company sends you an email with an activation link. This link leads you to an area with steps on how to configure your CDN zones. Since I’m sure many webmasters don’t have the slightest clue about zones, this is a wonderful area for getting things going.

The CDN backend, regardless of your CDN, looks similar to the WordPress dashboard. This is good news considering you have access to all of your tabs on the left hand side. Click on some of the buttons to manage things like account settings, reporting, zones and payments.

You even get a quick overview area that highlights your remaining traffic, used storage, credits and zones. The only part I would improve on the backend is the fact that many of the tabs don’t have useful explanations for those who are new to content delivery networks. Yes, you can go into the support documentation, but the ideal situation would be where you could scroll over a question mark in the dashboard to see what each module does.

KeyCDN Customer Service

A full knowledge base comes with your KeyCDN subscription. This helps you out when you simply want to figure out the problem for yourself, instead of sitting on the phone with a support representative.

Go to the Q&A, submit your own feedback or send in a specific request if you can’t find anything on the knowledge base. Not much is provided in terms of chat or phone support, so if you’re looking for a reply in a few minutes, your best bet is to find a solution in the knowledge base or you can also take advantage of their support ticket system powered by Help Scout.

KeyCDN also has a community forum in which you can participate in.

Conclusion

KeyCDN has just about everything you need in order to setup a CDN and make it work well for your website. Although the pull system and pricing is somewhat complex, the company offers plenty of documents and instructions to guide you through the process. Not to mention, the pricing is flexible and affordable for those who are just getting started with their first CDN or transferring over from somewhere else.
