Where are you from originally, where do you live and where would you like to live?

JLP
I am from, and still currently live, in Tallahassee, Florida USA. It’s a strange little college town with a ton of weird/rich history. We’ve had rock stars, serial killers and political disasters. I am also in love with our old city flag.
No plans on moving soon. I have toured with a few bands, so I have seen a lot of traveling. I do have plans to move to a small island off the Georgia State coast to run a bar and pizza joint. It’s a place called Jekyll island that is full of electric cars and even more history. It’s where the first international phone call was made. Ironically, my iPhone doesn’t work there.

You have a bunch of projects you’re working on right now. Which are the most important to you?

JLP
I am always neck deep in projects. I’m always really excited to work on packaging for music releases. It is also more of a pleasure because I am witnessing fewer requests for CD layouts and more for analog formats, vinyl and cassette tapes (yeah, those are back, too).
I also have some art shows coming up. No details to really share yet, but I am compiling a list of pieces I want to work on for them. Every gallery showing I display at I like to use all new/original work. I hate repeating myself.

What did you want to be when you were little?

JPL
When I really little I wanted to be a Ghostbuster. I had retail for an office picked out and everything. I didn’t really figure out that being a Ghostbuster wasn’t real. I just kind of moved on to something else.

Inspired
Tell us on fast-forward how’s your typical work day

JPL
Starting my day, I usually crawl my way out of bed late. Do all the normal person getting dressed and fed things.
My first work priority is checking my email and making a list of the stuff I gotta get done within the day. I like to be systematic about those kind of things. Otherwise I’ll just drag one thing out all day.
Depending on the day, I will just keep working till super late, or go have fun at a bar. On Wednesdays I take a little time off to pick up my hold stack at the comic store. I celebrate a 30 title reading list.

The best creative journeys start when you’re …

JLP
Wondering in the outside world (offline), dreaming, having a bath or listening to music.

Could you please share us a few recent inspiration sources?

JLP
I am always Inspired by pop-culture. I was raised in the 80′s. I have a crazy over exposure to classic video games, toys and cartoon franchises.
I grew up being around a lot of college kids. My mom worked part-time at a movie theatre in their division manager’s office. I quote and compare things daily to movies I grew up with. Back To The Future is a movie that I can’t stop thinking about.
Also, I picked up a lot of music listening to habits from that time period. I am a HUGE Pixies fan, and such, I am a totally into the v23 art packaging.
Finally, DC comic books are a big inspiration. Recently I have been focusing my illustration work more into the comic books stylization.

Inspired
What magazines do you like?

JLP
I used to pick up design/art magazines, but I could never focus on picking them up every month. I am so addicted to comic books it is hard for me to read anything else. All I can do is think about DC comic’s Wednesday Comics

Inspired
Is there anything on TV worth watching?

JLP
I am terrible at sitting down and watching TV now. I usually netflix and watch shows online. Some of my current watches are Smallville, Futurama, Batman: Brave & Bold and the Mighty Boosh is finally syndicated in the US, so I watch that OnDemand.

Could you tell us three of your favorite artists/personalities that you would like others to discover?

JLP
First off, everyone should know the art of David Barnes. He is the mastermind behind the Of Montreal album art and their live shows. That guy straight up lives to be creative. He never seems to stop.
Next is another friend, Josh Mikel. Great illustrator and I’ve collaborated with him a few times.
Last up is Frank Quietly who is the artist on the new comic series BATMAN AND ROBIN. I totally fell in love with his art on ALL STAR SUPERMAN. The style is so retro-future and clean, but in a super organic way.

What websites do you usually visit to get some visual inspiration?

JLP
For photo referencing google images and flick. I don’t really stare at the Internet to be inspired. The only thing the Internet is good for it killing time and boners.

Inspired
Mac or PC?

JLP
Apple Computers all the way. When I was starting out doing design it was on a PC and I wanted to put my head in an oven everyday while I waited for Photoshop to render images.

Which of your dreams do you want to come true?

JLP
The dream where I can fly. Had it a lot as a kid.

Inspired
Do you have any secret idea or formula that you would like to share with the Inspired Magazine readers?

JLP
Yes… by a big bottle of malt liquor, like Colt 45 or Olde E, and empty the neck of the bottle out. Fill the neck with cheap corner-market orange juice. Stick your thumb in like a quark and flip it to mix. You now have a Brass Monkey. I advise you don’t drink two back to back.
