That perfect web design is right on the tip of your brain, you just know it. But the inspiration just isn’t coming, and you can’t quite get yourself to focus on the layout, or the fonts or the colors. You feel creatively tapped and lacking in drive. Worst, those ideas that are so close to coming to the surface of your mind are just out of reach. Like they are floating away on a current, and you are just too bogged down and tired to go swimming after them.
Hey, we have all been there. Despite your best intentions, you can feel burnt out or just lazy. There is nothing wrong with it, as everyone faces the occasional bout of procrastination. Something as simple as a sunny day can make it next to impossible to concentrate, especially on something as involved as web design.
It isn’t always easy to get motivated, so here are some quotes to rev up the engine and spark your desire to design.
1. “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” Steve Jobs
Arguably one of the most famous designers of all time, the late Steve Jobs had his hand in a lot of pies through his life. His tastes for the aesthetic tended to lean more towards sleek ad futuristic, but he focused as much time on how the design played out for users as he did anything else. This quote speaks to his passion for getting things right on every level. It is a way of designing we can all adapt for ourselves. Via Business Profiles
2. “Simple is good.” Jim Henson
Muppet creator and designer extraordinaire Jim Henson is one guy that immediately makes out nostalgia bone go “aww!” If you think about it, this quote can actually be applied to anything: It’s one of the best quotes about life you get to come across!
his designs were rather simple in many ways. But they were made with so much focus and heart that they seemed complex by comparison. Sometimes it is the little things that make the biggest difference in creating an appealing design, and what you don’t do as much as what you do.
3. “Everything is designed. Few things are designed well.” Brian Reed
I absolutely believe this quote is true. You don’t have to look far to see examples in every facet of life of bad designs. Websites are especially disappointing, often times. Let this quote remind you to take the time and put in the effort to create the best look and function possible, even when you don’t feel like it.
4. “People ignore design that ignores people.” Frank Chimero
Useability, anyone? Designs that don’t take into account the people using them are destined to fail. Frank Chimero understood that when he said this, and we can take a lot from it. Every time you are getting ready to create or implement a design feature, as yourself “Would I want that?” If the answer is ‘no’, leave it out.
5. “Typography is the craft of endowing human language with a durable visual form.” Robert Bringhurst
I am a sucker for all things typography. Even other web designers I know think I am a total dork for how much I love font. But Bringhurst is absolutely right it is a visual method of conveying a more complex meaning. The look of a font can entirely make or break a design, and if you have selected the wrong typeface you might as well not try. I have seen some otherwise gorgeous websites fall entirely flat for this reason, or just look wrong because they are not showing the right emotion that fits with the site’s overall tone.
